My biggest complaint/compliment for the album is that its’ hodgepodge of songs reminds you how talented and good the bands studio albums are. But, when you listen in the extended jam never evolves into anything more.
The big climax of the album “A Brief History of Planet Earth” goes for a bit of a medley with “Rattlesnake” leading the charge. Poloygondwanaland shows up but provides a weaker portion of the album. Infest the Rats Nest’s section still hits hard and has you throwing up the horns immediately. It feels just as good live as it does at the end of Nonagon Infinity. I’m so happy that we finally get a capture of “Road Train” in a live setting. Chunky Shrapnel is a great reminder of how amazing of a band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is. The album does contain new music but, it comes in the form of Space Odyssey instrumentals. The album breaks its self into three chunks with songs from different cities spliced together to sound cohesive and continuous. This year now finds the band with their first “Rockumentary” and accompanying album of the same name Chunky Shrapnel– the name comes from everyones favorite cyborg Han-tyumi. At the beginning of 2020 they then dropped three surprise live albums to benefit the Wires Wildlife Rescue for bushfire relief efforts. In 2019, the band once again put their best feet forward with Fishing For Fishies and Infest the Rats Nest. TFN Final Take: For fans of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, any time an album is released, it’s an exciting time. Their musical styles include: jazz, thrash-metal, psych-pop, prog-rock, psychedelic folk, and blues to name a few. Audio for both shows was recorded by Craig Lawrence, and then mixed by Gizz mastermind Stu Mackenzie at the band’s studio in Melbourne Australia and mastered specially for vinyl. While the festival was canceled due to severe weather, this recording is one of two shows Gizz played at Barracuda (RIP) in downtown Austin that weekend and we were set up to capture it in all its glory. LP2 features the bands triumphant return to LEVITATION in 2016 and they are firing on all cylinders and celebrating the release of their Nonagon Infinity LP. These 2014 live versions feature early versions and a unique look into the creative process of a band that was about to explode onto the world scene. right after this tour the band would spend the summer in Brooklyn, NY recording I'm In Your Mind Fuzz and Quarters. This show happened to be the bands first ever performance in North America! "We've never played in America before" chimes Stu right before launching into their yet to be released 'I'm In Your Mind Fuzz' suite on side A.
The 2014 show, presented in full on the first LP, is particularly historic. This 4th release follows Live at Levitation releases from Kikagaku Moyo, The Black Angels and Primal Scream.
